Non-Invasive Pros and Cons

Traditional non-invasive sample collection  has two approaches to try and collect and produce high gDNA recovery.  While both methods have benefits, they also have their challenges.

  • Self collection, but limited to individuals capable of producing sufficient saliva
  • Collection solution contains alcohol
  • Yields sheared, short-fragment DNA not optimal for complex downstream applications
  • Up to 40% bacterial content
  • High gDNA recovery when the full sample is processed (up to 30µg/sample)
  • Cold chain processing not needed
  • Low gDNA recovery with high bacterial contamination
  • High resampling rate reduces operational efficiency and increases processing costs
  • Transit time of dry swabs exponentially accelerates sample degradation
  • Swab removal not automation friendly
  • Self collection but simple collection
  • Subjects compliance 70%-90%

The iSWAB DNA collection system addresses the issue of saliva based collection, especially for instances when producing enough saliva is an issue such as for infants and toddlers or people experiencing xerostomia (dry mouth).  Since the iSWAB DNA collection system utilizes swabs for collection, making it a more universal sample collection method, superior to saliva/spit collection, that can address any population segment while achieving high quality gDNA.
